Pre-Apprentiship Program for Women

Monday, July 14, 2014

With Funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and in collaboration with St Clair College, WEST has launched a Pre-Apprentiship Program for Women.  This unique 14 week course is designed to up-skill women looking to enter into skilled trades.  As a result of the funding, candidates are eligible to receive free tuition, transportation and childcare as part of the program.

In order to be considered for funding, the Ministry is requesting that industry demonstrates their support for this initiative through the provision of a cash or in-kind contribution. Recognizing that an essential factor for the economic prosperity of any community is having access to a skilled workforce, gaining an understanding of the challenges limiting companies from increasing representation of women becomes important. Such knowledge would better position employers to create systemic changes that could increase their access to a larger labour supply.

Women's Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. has been serving the Windsor-Essex community since 1987. WEST was established in response to the disproportionately high level of unemployment among women and the difficulties they experienced when attempting to enter the workforce. This unique program, aimed at preparing women for a career in skilled trades is seeking candidates that are interested in participating in the program, as well as local manufacturers to support the program.
