Food Tourism Strategy Unveiled

tep aside Niagara and Prince Edward County, Windsor-Essex wants to become Ontario’s next go-to culinary destination.

“There’s a lot of exciting opportunities,” said Lynnette Bain, vice-president of tourism programs at Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island, at the launch Tuesday of a new strategy to boost this region’s profile among food tourists from both inside and outside the region.

The strategy, which will be rolled out in phases starting this year and stretching past 2017, was developed by the Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance at the request of the city of Windsor and TWEPI, after mayor Eddie Francis made it a strategic priority to promote food tourism to generate economic activity.

Along with getting local food businesses and related tourist services working more closely together to promote Windsor-Essex, the strategy recommends improving the activities already on offer – such as the Lake Erie shore wine route – and adding the missing pieces to meet food tourists’ needs, such as developing a regional “passport” for tourists.

Some of those ideas are already in motion, Bain said. For example, the region’s micro-brewery sector is growing, local entrepreneurs are starting up evening and night time farmers markets and local wines will now be available for sale at farmers markets. [Read More]
