The owner of the former Walker Power building on Devonshire Rd. wants to expand the site.
Dillon Consulting, which represents the owner, approached the city's Development Standing Committee on Monday looking for a bylaw amendment to add a fifth-storey to the building and to make sure commercial use is allowed on the ground floor.
Carl Tanner is a partner with the firm and says the building is currently being renovated, with the plan to add commercial use on the ground floor with office space taking over the remaining floors.
"The idea was the capture and take full advantage of the building, was to add the fifth floor, add a little bit more square footage," says Tanner. "It provides some additional office space and also amenity space for tenants in the building."
He says the building, which has been around for over 100-year, is very popular.
"I think there's a lot of interest around the city in the structure itself," says Tanner. "I think there's a lot of folks that have been watching it being renovated and the design is quite nice. It speaks to that historic flavour."
The committee approved the request and the matter now heads to city council for final approval.
If council approves the request, Tanner believes construction on the fifth floor will begin later this year.
