Media Advisory: Multicultural Council of Windsor-Essex

In an effort to show their appreciation to their new communities, government-assisted refugees from Syria and Iraq are taking part in a blood drive for Canadian Blood Services. This initiative, led by the Multicultural Council of Windsor & Essex County (MCC) and Canadian Blood Services, is a result of ongoing requests from refugees to ‘give back’ to the communities that not only received them -  but in many cases, saved them. Approximately 50 donors are expected from four partnering agencies.

“The MCC is often witness to the overwhelming gratitude of refugees. Many of our clients have fled unimaginable tragedy – arriving in Windsor-Essex with very little.  Not knowing how to express their appreciation for the safety and security received here – families regularly deliver artwork, cards, and of course plenty of food - to our office. Donating blood is a gift of life, and a meaningful way for our refugees to contribute to the communities that welcomed them.” - Kathleen Thomas, Executive Director, Multicultural Council

“Canadian Blood Services is excited to partner with the Multicultural Council of Windsor & Essex County. We are grateful to provide newcomers to Canada with the opportunity to give back to their community through blood donations, which is after all, one of the most important things to give to someone else - the gift of life.” – Marisa Gatfield, Territory Manager (Windsor), Canadian Blood Services.
