LEAMINGTON, Ontario — The Leamington District Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce, in conjunction with Workforce Windsor-Essex (WFWE), that it has received funding in the amount of $64,639 . This grant is the result of a competitive RFP conducted by the Local Employment Planning Council, a newly formed pilot body of WFWE, and is bolstered by in-kind donations from the local employer community of up to $20,000.

This project is supported by Ministry of Advanced Education and Skill Development, and it aims to address identified skills gaps in local labour markets by implementing innovation solutions to a skills mismatch and conducting research on a growing sector in Windsor-Essex. As well, the project will address barriers for those who are unemployed or underemployed. The customer service skills gap was recently highlighted by local employers as part of the Leamington Labour Market Partnership Project, a year–long study analyzing demographics, employer demand for labour, and the available local supply.

Renee Daudlin-Iacobelli, of Insight Advantage Training, will provide the customized training packages targeted at employees and employers in the hospitality and retail sectors. A full day training session will be offered on both Pelee Island (in August) and in Leamington (in September). In Phase 2, unemployed candidates with an interest in working in this sector, will be provided with more detailed training over a six week period.

Denise Ghanam, the Chamber’s labour market specialist, will design and implement a pre and post-test research model to assess the impact of the training on the employees. Further, she will conduct research to evaluate the outcome for employers of employees with enhanced customer service skills.

The need for continued support of small businesses, by responding to their identified needs and by providing accessible and useful training is critical for future economic development. This project reinforces the Leamington District Chamber’s critical role as the voice of entrepreneurs and local private enterprises, by introducing community-based workforce development initiatives, with educational and skills training available locally.
