Within the next couple weeks the final four-kilometre stretch of the $1.4-billion Herb Gray Parkway will open to traffic, finally ending all road construction under the new Highway 401 extension that will soon reach the city’s west end in Brighton Beach.
There will still be up to another year of landscaping work, tree planting and final touches to be applied to the massive 11-kilometre below-grade border highway project, but the seemingly endless road construction that forced Windsor’s drivers to deal with an aggravating four years of detours and lane reductions will conclude.
“It’s obviously been a struggle with a lot of objects in the way and things to overcome,” said Dwayne Dawson, the City of Windsor’s executive director of operations. “But the end result is a vastly improved transportation system with many new alternatives to move traffic through the city.
“Highway 401 has now been brought in all the way to the west end of the city where it will provide an easy access, also for parts of LaSalle. There will be no more traffic lights or manoeuvring needed to find your way.”
