St. Clair College celebrated the opening Thursday of its new $25-million SportsPlex.
The 85,000-square-foot athletic centre will not only play host to the school’s sports teams, but also includes a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot fitness facility, classrooms, aerobics room and running track.
“This will be key for us as a college to be able to recruit athletes, but most importantly give our students and fans a better experience,” said John Fairley, vice-president of college and community relations at St. Clair.
The new gym will be able to hold up to 2,000 spectators and is scheduled to host its first varsity games — men’s and women’s basketball against Lambton College — on Oct. 22.
College vice-president Ron Seguin, who oversees athletics at St. Clair, indicated the new SportsPlex has already started paying dividends by creating “double the recruiting interest” among out-of-town athletes.
