Some City of Windsor officials are being thrust into new roles in case of an emergency.

The Emergency Operations Centre played out a scenario similar to that of 9/11 yesterday, with all of its partners in the room from EMS, Enwin, the Canadian Border Services Agency, Windsor police and fire.

City CAO Helga Reidel’s been given the new role of managing multiple departments during an emergency. “I think other cities do it this way. Some have their emergency lead doing it, but today I took the data from the departments and made sure everything was coordinated, and that was a great experience for me. I think I now feel much more capable of doing that in an emergency.”

Reidel says there were a few new faces in the room, so it was a good chance for everyone to get familiar with one another, and get to know the proper protocol in these situations.

The last time the EOC had to be activated was during a massive fire on Sprucewood Ave. about a year ago.
