Windsor-Essex ranks second in the latest Small American Cities of the Future awards for 2013.
Gauging how North American cities promote themselves to potential foreign investors, Windsor-Essex only lost out to Lafayette, La., in the category of best foreign direct investment strategy in the contest by fDi Magazine, a publication of The Financial Times.
“It is a big deal,” said Rakesh Naidu, acting-COO of the WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation. “It allows us to put this before clients — we can show we are very aggressive.”
The judges were impressed by this area’s multi-pronged strategy in pursuing the increasingly competitive segment of foreign direct investment. The city’s community improvement program (CIP), sector and market targeting and hosting on international delegations, as well as innovations like a capabilities’ database of local manufacturers and an online demographic tool were all cited.
Despite high unemployment, Naidu said the numbers are getting better and results are beginning to show from a strategy of “strengthening our core and diversifying … we need to be patient.”
