'Potential' for 100 new jobs at Lakeside Plastics

The Windsor Star/Grace Macaluso

Lakeside Plastics is holding a job fair Saturday in its quest to hire up to 100 people for its Windsor operations.

Most of the hiring — about 70 positions — is contingent upon the company winning new automotive work, Jim Gazo, newly appointed president at the auto parts supplier, said Tuesday.

“We’re in the midst of heavy duty quoting with customers for new vehicle programs. Some are more immediate, others are further out,” said Gazo.

Gazo optimistic

But the company’s ongoing success in winning quality awards from GM gives Gazo reason to be optimistic.

“We’re hoping for good fortune to fall upon us in the near future,” said Gazo.

On Wednesday, the company will celebrate its second consecutive year it has received awards from General Motors for quality, customer service and after sales. It also has been named GM’s pinnacle supplier of the year.

General Motors key customer

Lakeside builds plastic trim components, which are shipped to GM’s Oshawa plant and its Michigan operations in Orion Township, Lansing and Hamtramck. The company also supplies components to customers in Mexico, Korea, and China, and acts as a Tier 2 supplier to other parts manufacturers.

The Chevrolet Traverse SUV is among five GM vehicles that contain interior plastic components built by Lakeside. Other vehicles include the Chevy Camaro muscle car, Sonic subcompact, and Chevy Impala and Buick Verano sedans.

Lakeside in growth mode

Since 2011, Lakeside’s workforce has increased by 175 to 330 people. Gazo said the company is looking to fill a variety of jobs, including processors, setup technicians, electricians, millwrights, IT specialists, quality engineers, program managers, plant supervisors and team leaders.

Booming North American auto sales and the lower Canadian dollar are boosting hiring at local parts plants, said Gazo.

“The currency is definitely helping us,” he said. “There’s been a higher amount of opportunity just in the last 18 months. With the possibility of another 100 employees, multiply that by another five or six indirect jobs and we’re creating employment for another 500 people. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Job fair

The job fair is Saturday at the Caboto Club between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Lakeside looking to fill the following positions: production associates (assembly), skilled trades, processors, setup technicians, electricians, PLC specialists, millwrights, material co-ordinators, quality engineers, warehouse supervisors, inventory analysts, cost estimating manager, senior cost estimators, manufacturing engineers, plant supervisor, team leaders.
