CanExport provides up to $50M over 5 yrs. to Canadian SMEs seeking to develop new export opportunities
The Minister of International Trade, Chrystia Freeland, formally launched CanExport, a new export market development contribution program.
CanExport will provide up to $50 million over five years in direct financial support to Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking to develop new export opportunities. It aims to benefit hundreds of companies each year.
Funding and Stacking Limits
A 50/50 cost-shared program, CanExport will help Canadian businesses finance international development activities such as market research, adaptation of marketing material for target markets and participation at trade fairs and missions. Annual non-repayable contributions range from a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $99,999 per application, per year. The program is open to companies in all sectors, with the exception of agriculture, food and beverage and fish and seafood which continue to be supported by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriMarketing Program.
The total amount of all government assistance (federal, provincial/territorial, municipal) under CanExport cannot exceed 50 percent of the total eligible expenses. However, CanExport may still complement existing funding programs within other federal departments. In fact, as long as the recipient still provides 50 percent of total eligible expenses, assistance from more than one program could be combined, for instance, either when an applicant is requiring more than $99,999 in financial assistance or when targeting multiple markets or projects at the same time.
Further information about the program
For details about the program, please visit the CanExport webpage. Most notably, the Applicant’s Guide and Frequently Asked Question (FAQs) provide details on eligibility, eligible activities and expenses, the application and assessment process, funding limits as well as reporting requirements and audits.
This program, amongst other Government programs and services will assist Canadian businesses succeed abroad, while continuing to contribute to our economic prosperity. In the near future, we plan to organise a series of webinars about CanExport across Canada that will target potential SME applicants in your regions.
