The Town of Leamington is investing $420,000 to connect its trail system with the Chrysler Canada Greenway.
Rob Sharon, director of infrastructure services, said councillors awarded the tender earlier this week to Windsor-based Fullerton Construction.
Sharon said work has already begun to connect the first phase of trail construction – on the north side of the municipality from County Road 8 into town – that was completed last year.
“This year we’re building the section down Mersea Road 3, basically into Kingsville and ERCA has a little piece in there and we’re going to connect up with the Chrysler (Canada) Greenway in Kingsville right around the landfill,” Sharon said.
The Chrysler Canada Greenway is a 50-kilometre, multi-use trail that winds its way through Essex County, from Oldcastle to Leamington.
He said trail construction in Lakeshore on the north side of County Road 8 will bring the trail almost to Comber.
“So we will have a continuous trail network basically from Comber to the end of the Greenway up near Windsor,” Sharon said.
Work in Leamington, which is in partnership with TransCanada Trail, is expected to be completed before the end of summer.
