There will be legions of opportunities for local businesses to cash in on construction the new Gordie Howe International Bridge, according to the local economic development corporation.

The WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation will host an information session later this month to give local companies an idea of how they can take advantage of the $1-billion project.

The meeting happens June 25 at the Fogolar Furlan Club.

"This is the most important infrastructure project in the Country. While this large-scale project is open to the world for bidding, our companies have a unique opportunity to participate. The sooner we have details, the better our companies can prepare," said Sandra Pupatello, CEO of WEEDC.

Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt will be the keynote speaker at the session.

Pupatello says thousands of people will be employed during the construction of the new bridge.

"But even after the bridge is built and it's up and underway, there will be such a massive difference in what we see, in terms of our border crossing, from the customs plaza, the running and operating of the actual bridge, the maintenance of the bridge. There is going to be a requirement for hundreds and hundreds of people that we don't have today," she said.
